education and community projects

The first Liverpool Irish Festival event of 2008 kicked off on 3 March, Tricia Lacey, an experienced workshop leader and teacher at Greenbank Primary School took workshops into Merseyside schools who esch spent a day creating a piece of drama on the Irish myth 'The Sorrowful Story of the Children of Lir'.

'The Children of Lir' is a famous legend about four children who fall under a spell changing them into swans. The children have to endure separation from their family and friends, and suffer many hardships until the terms of the enchantment are fulfilled and they regain their human form and find peace at last.

The story is told through narration while the children use mime and dance to animate the narrative. There is a slide show to accompany the story. The music is emotive and exciting, using extracts from 'The Seville Suite', 'River Dance', 'The Children of Lir' 'Brian Boru' and others.

Schools received suggestions for extended work, the script for narration, a CD of the music and a CD of the slide show and teacher's pack. The slide show can be saved and customised with pupils' own art work. Liverpool Irish Festival has custom made costumes to lend.

If your school or community group is interested in having Children of Lir workshops at your school please contact the Liverpool Irish Festival. Anna Gilbert, Festival Director 07903 142 133.
